This part of the wiki digs into how the GSF works: how its principles inform its structure and day-to-day operations.
If you’re in search of a general overview, you may wish to join one of our orientation calls—see here for more information. However, if you’re looking to take the next step in your involvement with the GSF, read on!
The Foundation has several governance layers:
Projects
Projects are led by individual GSF members, resourced by GSF, and governed by one of our four Working Groups. They may involve:
- producing a document, such as requirements or use cases, a white paper, or an analysis;
- a software project which replaces or build on the Foundation's capability; or
- growing the community of green software practitioners through events, training, and other community activities.
Working Groups
Working Groups (’WGs’) are how GSF drives and organises its activities. As above, every Project will belong to a WG.
Each WG is led by one or more Chair with support from the GSF team.
Executive Team
The Executive Team is led by the Executive Director, appointed by the Chairperson of the Foundation, and includes the Project Director and Operations Director.
The Executive Team ensures the GSF is operating efficiently and effectively based on the mission and organization’s OKRs. The Executive Team also manages project managers that support the foundation’s Working Groups and Projects, and support the Steering Committee and its Chairperson.
Committees
Committees are exclusive, member-only leadership bodies with a defined scope, and some level of devolved decision making power in their area, guided by the foundation’s Steering Committee. They provide guidance across all of our WGs and Projects for their particular area.
Working Group Chairs Committee
The Working Group Chairs (’WGC’) are responsible for more technical, tactical, day-to-day aspects of running the Foundation. They review project proposals and make recommendations to the Steering Committee (’SC’) for changes to the budget or our Charter.
Steering Committee
The Steering Committee (’SC’) is the main governing body of the Green Software Foundation. Participants are selected by Steering Member Organizations. Each Steering Member Organization can nominate a primary and an alternate representative.
