Projects are led by individual GSF members, resourced by GSF, and governed by one of our four Working Groups. They may involve:
- producing a document, such as requirements or use cases, a white paper, or an analysis;
- a software project which replaces or build on the Foundation's capability; or
- growing the community of green software practitioners through events, training, and other community activities.

There are two types of projects at the Green Software Foundation:
- Document projects (see Document Project Lifecycle)
- These are consensus-based. They produce a document, such as a requirements or use cases document, a whitepaper, or an analysis.
- Software projects (see Software Project Lifecycle)
- These are maintainer-based. They develop a new capability, refactor, or remove an existing capability for the Green Software Foundation technology releases. They may be a new component (e.g. a new repository) or may propose additions, deletions, or changes to an existing repository or repositories.
